Granite is an igneous rock of visible crystalline formation and texture. It consists of feldspar which is usually a potash feldspar and oligoclase. It also consists of quartz along with a small amount of mica (biotite or Muscovite) and minor accessory minerals, such as zircon, apatite, magnetite, limonite, and Sphene. Granite is normally whitish or gray with a dotted appearance that is actually caused by the darker crystals. Potash feldspar gives a red or flesh color to the rock. Granite crystallizes from magma which cools down slowly, beneath the earth’s surface. The slower rates of cooling actually gives rise to a very coarse-grained variety called pegmatite. Granite forms the base of the continental masses along with other crystalline rocks, and it is the most commonly available intrusive rock present on the earth’s surface.

Although granite has been known as igneous rocks derived from molten masses or magmas, but some evidences of granite indicates that the origin may be attributed to regional metamorphism or pre-existing rocks, rearrangement and crystallization which takes place without a liquid or molten stage.

The specific gravity of granite ranges from 2.63 to 2.75. It has a crushing strength ranging from 1050 to 14,000 kg per sq cm (15,000 to 20,000 lb per sq in). Granite has a superior strength than sandstone, limestone, and marble and is individually more difficult to excavate. It is an important building stone, the best grades being extremely resistant to varying weather condition.

Normally granite is classified into three different groups:

  • FINE GRAIN: In this type of granite the feldspar crystals averages about 1/16 – 1/8″ in diameter.
  • MEDIUM GRAIN: In this type of granite the feldspar crystals average about 1/4″ in diameter.
  • COARSE GRAIN: In this type the feldspar crystal average 1/2″, and has a better diameter. Coarse grain granites may have a lower density.

In recent years about 83 percent of the stone used for monuments has been granite, about 17 percent, marble.
